Viktor Plotnikov. Those in the dance world are getting excited. Others are saying ok, who is that? Viktor Plotnikov is a past principal dancer with the Boston Ballet turned choreographer extraordinaire. After many years on the stage, he brought his talents to the rehearsal studio to create contemporary (modern) style pieces. His work is always an audience favorite wherever it is performed - whether it be on the stage of dance companies throughout the United States or from young dancers competing in the competition circuit. Even the critics enjoy it. He has received choreography awards from the Helsinki International Ballet Competition, World Ballet Competition, and the International Choreographic Competition.

Three of Viktor Plotnikov's pieces are set to be featured in the Central Florida Ballet's upcoming performance of "An Evening of Dance". All of which are anticipated to be of the most popular pieces of the evening. What sets his choreography apart you ask? Well, its difficult to say. Viktor Plotnikov's choreography cannot be described in one word or actually even ten."Plotnikov's choreography is simply the complete unexpected. He kind of knocks you down each time you see a piece" says CFB Company Dancer, Kailey Klopfenstein. He uses the music to create unusual movements and when they are combined together creates "the unexpected".

Evening of Dance Combines Classical Tradition with Gala Flair

The Central Florida Ballet has announced its new two-part Spring performance, “An Evening of Dance”, which offers a great balance for the entire family. The first act will offer gala flair with a variety of short numbers; each ranging from classical to comedy to modern & contemporary styles. Such pieces will include “Tea Time” which pokes fun at formal tea parties and the proper etiquette of guests in the 1900’s as well as traditional classical excerpts of the delightfully fun “Tarantella” and romantic style “La Vivandiere”.

In contrast, the second act will showcase one traditional story ballet, “Act III: The Enchanted Garden” from Le Corsaire a full-length story ballet. Set in King Pasha's palace, beautiful women dance and play tricks on the king. The ballet transitions into a dream sequence where "Medora, Gulnare, and the women of the harem join together to dance a fantastical Grand Ballabile in which they celebrate beauty, grace, and harmony in a garden filled with flowers and magic fountains". Diane Withee, Studio Company Rehearsal Master says, “We wanted to shake up the traditional performance format of either seeing a story ballet or numbers in a gala. We definitely achieved that and know our audience will benefit from the diversity of this evening’s repertoire”.

Tickets are limited for “An Evening of Dance”, a one-night only performance held at the Trinity Preparatory School on Saturday, March 24 at 7pm. General Admission is $10 (Children 10 & Under) and/or $25 (Adults 11 & Up) available by calling 407.849.9948.

Beginner Ballet Causes Nerves, Excitement, & Thrill

Every Wednesday, adult students walk through the doors of Central Florida Ballet's Studios fifteen minutes before the class begins. Some are regulars and others are trying something brand new. Yes, we are talking about the dare devils who decide they want to try a ballet class. From those who took ballet when they were young - to - those who never danced before they are all thinking the same things.... 1) I don't want to embarrass myself. 2) What if there are advanced dancers in the class? 3) Will I be able to follow along? 4) Will I want to come back?

Well we are here to tell you the answers...and give you the real insider's scoop in what actually happens at Beginner Ballet at the Central Florida Ballet.

I don't want to embarrass myself. Most often everyone in the Beginner Ballet class is just that - Beginner! Everyone is in the same boat and learning just like you. They are unsure of where to put their arms or how to do a "tendu" or "jete". So no worries. You won't embarrass yourself. If anything you will proud of what you learn and your accomplishments after attending several classes. You will also make new friends and help each other during the class too.

What if there are advanced dancers in the class? Rarely this happens. But if there are Advanced dancers trust us - they are so focused on their own technique they will not notice anything else. Plus most often they really like to help out new students and enjoy teaching to others. They are just normal people and understand the difficulty of starting from scratch.

Will I be able to follow along? Its all a learning process. The Beginner Ballet class goes slowly to teach each of the students the basics of ballet. From the position of your arms to your feet the instructor covers it all. So, if you don't remember a step its completely normal and all a part of the learning process! It would actually be just unusual if you picked up everything right away.

Will I want to come back? Most often the answer is yes, but it really depends on you. Many students enjoy trying something new and shaking up their regular routine. Others enjoy how good you feel after the class - hello endorphins. Some enjoy the challenge of learning. Or many just enjoy revisiting their dance memories from the past and simply enjoy the arts.

Is Beginner Ballet looking less intimidating now? We certainly hope so because it truly is a great way to get in shape and actually have FUN exercising! If you are up to the challenge try next week's class held from 11am-12pm every Wednesday at Central Florida Ballet. No pre-registration required. Simply show up and its $10 a class! So many of us dance enthusiasts watch an incredible amount of videos on YouTube. We have seen all the varieties out there...from the fun, clever, oddly unique or the always popular "oh my gosh they are incredible" videos. So we gathered some of our favorites just for you...ENJOY!

"Boogie Shoes"

We love this dance because its just plain fun and urges you to get up and dance; that is if you haven't already started. The dance starts near the 0:45 minute mark.

"Yanis Pikieris - Moscow Gold Medal"

Yes, this video definitely brings you back many years or actually decades. All we can say however is the dancing is purely magical! Don't miss the second half of the video which showcases Pikieris's stunning Don Quixote variation and coda - talk about endless attitude turns!

"Diana Vishneva in Firebird Pas de Deux"

This video caught our eye for several reasons. Number One - "Firebird" is a ballet not performed in Orlando very often or actually even a time we can remember. Number Two: Vishneva is a true star of the ballet world; from her artistry to her impeccable technique she simply captures your attention for this six minute pas de deux!

"Good Morning, Good Morning"

We picked this video because its a timeless classic and who knew you could stand on furniture in that time or that there are so many ways to use coats...watch the video to see what we are talking about! Don't miss the ballet "bar" at the 2:40 minute mark.

CFB Selects Students for Summer Intensive

This Saturday, January 14 marks the annual audition for the Central Florida Ballet's Summer Intensive Dance Program. This intensive ballet-focused program provides formal Russian classical ballet training for local and out-of-town students. "We find our dancers improve their classical technique significantly over the duration of this program for several reasons." says Diane Withee, the CFB School Director.

For one, our Russian style of training is known as one of the most difficult, but rewarding in the dance world. The Central Florida Ballet's Founder & Executive Director, Vasile Petrutiu, and Artistic Director, Vladimir Bykov, are primary instructors of the Summer Intensive and both were trained in national elite ballet schools under the Vaganova (Russian) style. Furthermore, students are able to focus their whole day on just dance during the summer term. Meaning they have ample time and energy to perfect their dance vocabulary while learning new steps. The Advanced level students have a full day of classes Monday-Friday.

A typical day begins at 9:00am with ballet technique followed by pointe and variations. Then after a one hour lunch break students continue with classes in complimenting dance styles such as modern, jazz, character, lyrical, yoga or repertoire where they learn a ballet presented in a final performance for family and friends at the end of the session. Plus each week different workshops are given discussing dance-related topics including dance history, acting, stage make-up and hair, and nutrition. Since opening in 2000, the CFBA's exemplary training method is shining brighter than ever..Recent Alumni of the Central Florida Ballet Academy and Summer Intensive include:

Central Florida Ballet Delights Romania with ‘Nutcracker’

Just over a week ago the Central Florida Ballet concluded its tour to Romania for its award-winning production of “The Nutcracker”. A large group of thirty-five students, dancers, parents and staff traveled across the Atlantic to bring the magic and joy of the CFB production to Sibiu, Romania (the city of which was named the cultural capital of the European Union in 2007). A total of five performances were held at the ‘Casa de Cultură a Sindicatelor’ where Romanian families saw a modern and American twist to the holiday classic.

Vasile Petrutiu, Founder and Executive Director, of the Central Florida Ballet says he never doubted the performances would be well-received in Romania… “It was a unique production few have seen in Romania...From the pyrotechnics, sets and backdrops, to the American choreography and nuances along with the impressive technique of our Academy students – the families were astounded by the end of each performance.” The success and acclaim the production received however did take lots of detailed, painstaking preparation.

To bring the production overseas the ballet companies had just barely three months to create the same production more than 5,500 miles away or 24 hours traveling time by airplane. The Teatrul de Balet Sibiu created new backdrops from the designs of Central Florida Ballet’s set designer, Dorin Gal; large and small props were needed including the sleigh, large Owl clock, cannon, couch, puppet carriage; costumes were made for the Waltz of the Flowers and Snow Scene plus many of the Act II divertissement; not to mention preparing the dancers, pyrotechnics, light design nor travel, food, and housing arrangements or even media attention; both companies certainly had their work cut out for them.

Asked if the Central Florida Ballet will return to Romania for more performances, Vasile says “Definitely. It was a great learning experience for our dancers, many of whom have never been out of the United States. It opened their eyes to a new culture and way of living – and a new language! At the same time, the citizens of Romania expanded their view of the American culture likewise.”

Next up for the Central Florida Ballet is “The Enchanted Garden”; a free performance performed by the CFB Studio Company and sponsored by the annual ArtsFest of United Arts of Central Florida. Nutcracker in Romania: Take a Tour in Pictures

From December 13 - 22 of 2011, the Central Florida Ballet embarked on its first performance tour of "The Nutcracker". Thirty-five dancers and parents made the trip overseas to Sibiu, Romania where performances were held in collaboration with the Teatrul de Balet Sibiu. From flying overseas, to counting lei (Romanian dollars), communicating with the locals, and traveling the countryside it was truly an experience to remember for a lifetime. The Christmas Market held in the main plaza of Sibiu. Our dancers found many homemade gifts for their friends and family here. Dancer Travels to Romania for 'Nutcracker' Rehearsals

Dancers of the Central Florida Ballet are about to cross the Atlantic for the upcoming performance tour of "The Nutcracker" in Romania, but one dancer got an extra special head start on the group. Kailey Withee, a trainee of the Central Florida Ballet, traveled to Romania in mid-November to assist in 'Nutcracker' rehearsals with the dancers of the Ballet Sibiu. She spent nearly two weeks in Romania to teach the soloists and the corps dancers the choreography of the Central Florida Ballet's Nutcracker. From crossing the ocean for the first time to understanding the Romanian language - there were many firsts. Check out Kailey's experience below in our exclusive interview!

This is me on one of my only days off during the trip. We went to shops around Sibiu and to one of the tallest buildings in the city...

1- Describe your typical rehearsal day...

KW: My typical day started at 10:00am with a warm-up class. We started rehearsal at 11:00am and went until about 7-8pm during the first couple of days and by the end of the trip we were ending around 3-4pm. We started with long individual rehearsals with the soloists and by the end we were running the entire show all the way through with the entire cast. We even got to rehearse at the theater which is in the same building as the rehearsal studios.

2- How were the classes different from regular classes at Central Florida Ballet?

KW: The only class I had was a warm-up class every morning. But it was pretty similar too what we have here. The combinations had a lot of back and forth, so it took a little getting used to versus the classes from our regular teachers at CFB.

3- Did the dancers speak English? What other languages did they speak?

KW: Pretty much all the dancers spoke fluent or knew a lot of english, A group was from Japan (so they spoke Japanese). The rest were American or Romanian (so they spoke Romanian).

4- Did you have time to go sight-seeing? If so, where and what did you see?

KW: Didn't really have time. We went to an old church - it was very beautiful and we went to the top of one of the tallest buildings (as you can see in the picture above). Each floor had art work to look at and at the top you could see the whole city. That's pretty much all I had time for.

5- How long were your flights? Did they have good food on the airplane? Were there any annoying passengers?

KW: The first flight was to Paris. It was about 9-10 hours long. The food was ok. The had a good variety of things (such as chicken and vegetables or pasta). But it wasn't that great. There weren't any annoying passengers, in fact on the way back I had the whole row to myself, so I could stretch out along the seats.

6- Tell us about your grocery shopping experience..Did they have normal shopping carts? Any of the same brands as in the USA?

KW: They did not have carts but they had shopping baskets. The only US Brands were coke products and lays chips products.

7- Was it cold?

KW: It was cold but manageable. The studios sometimes felt colder than outside, lol. You always had warm-ups on (jackets, sweats, scarf) versus in Florida where we regularly just wear a leotard and tights.

8- What do you wish you brought to Romania - but did not?

Nothing I really felt like I had everything. The item I used the most outside of dance was my computer to watch movies and to pass the time. Also, I used my camera to take pictures.

9- What do you want to see when you go back this December for the 'Nutcracker' performances?

KW: When we were there, they were putting up all of their Christmas decorations along the streets and lights on all of the stores. The day we left they started a Christmas/holiday market and that lit everything up. So I want to see the market and how beautiful all the streets look lit up.

10- What is a key item to have in Romania for a dancer?

KW: A key item(s) would be warm-ups; you need to stay warm in order to be able to dance to your fullest and to be comfortable dancing. The theatre especially was cold.

11- Did you have soda there? Or Powerade/Vitamin Water?

KW: They had coke products. No powerade or vitamin water. I mostly drank water and sometimes "Coca-Cola Lite" - their version of Diet Coke.

12- As a CFB Trainee and just sixteen, were you intimidated or scared to be teaching the professionals the choreography from the Central Florida Ballet's "The Nutcracker"?

KW: I think I was at first, just because I didn't know them or know if they knew English. I also didn't want to mess anything up or teach them something wrong. But when I arrived there they were all so welcoming and sweet. So those feelings quickly went away.

13- What was one thing that surprised you the most about Sibiu or Romania in general?

KW: One thing that surprised me the most was how comfortable I felt there. I wasn't scared to go out on my own or kinda explore a little. As long as you are careful, and smart of course. It is a great city!!!

Central Florida Ballet is sponsoring this contest among students of Orange, Lake, Osceola and Seminole Counties in all three levels: Elementary, Middle, and High school. These students will have the opportunity to enter Christmas or Nutcracker themed essays, poems, or art pieces to be judged by a Central Florida Ballet committee. Written entries must be no more than 350 words. Submissions of clay, pottery, or other breakable artwork are NOT permitted.

Central Florida Ballet's Nutcracker Becomes a Book!

Central Florida Ballet's production of "The Nutcracker" premiered in 2001 and since has become of the the most popular in Central Florida. The Nutcracker ballet is based on the classic holiday story in which a Nutcracker doll comes to life as an enchanted prince and saves the pretty young maiden Maria, from distress and then traveling to his kingdom, the magical "Land of the Sweets".

In the fall of 2009, Morgan Lee (a talented professional photographer) decided to reverse the process - to make the CFB's Nutcracker a picture story book. Using '70s and '80s era film cameras, Lee began to document on 135 film the rehearsal process at the Central Florida Ballet's Studios. The outcome? To create a story in photographs of bringing this professional production to the stage. Over 4,000 photographs and two years later, Lee is finally close to completing the book.

This holiday season is sure to be brighter with the addition of two new events hosted by the Central Florida Ballet. Each event will be hosted before a 'Nutcracker' performance providing opportunity for attendees to get a 2 in 1 Holiday Special!

NUTCRACKER SILENT AUCTION - SATURDAY, DEC. 10TH
The first event is the 'Nutcracker' Silent Auction which will be held Saturday, December 10th from 5:30-7:30pm at the OCCC. Every trip to the ballet is an exciting one. You go once or a couple times a year. You see ballet dancers on their toes (it must hurt!) and guys in tights. Sit in a large theater amongst the excitment of an anxious crowd ready to see the performance and wondering what will happen onstage. Waiting for the curtain open....but before this happens you can do several easy things to make your trip to the ballet even better! Read below for the highest recommended tips from our experts at the Central Florida Ballet.

CFB's Office Administrator Tip: # 5 - Get your tickets early! You will save a lot of time and headache skipping past the hectic ticket line the night of the performance. AND by ordering early, you have a greater selection of tickets which means you are almost guaranteed a great seat - perhaps near the aisle or smack dab in the center. It a double win!

Mom of CFB Academy Student Tip # 4 - What to Wear. Most of my friends I invite to the show ask what they should wear. Well, there is no specific dress code for the ballet performance, however most attendees dress to show respect for the ballet - anything ranging from your Sunday best to business attire will do.

CFB's Executive Director Tip # 3 - Give yourself ample time in case of traffic delays on the roadways and for parking. Pre-performance "people watching" is much more fun than last minute dashing and the Linda Chapin Theater is a beautiful place for it.

CFB's School Director Tip #2 - Look the program. Take a few minutes before the show to glance through the program. It will give you a synopsis of the ballet story being presented and you can check out the biographies of the dancers you are about to see onstage.

CFB's Artistic Director Tip #1 - Enjoy the performance! Take the time to simply enjoy the production and revel in the sets, costumes, dancing, and lights. There is truly nothing like it!

Dancers Raise Money for Romania Tour!

Director Seeks Roots for 'Nutcracker' – Launches Partnership with Ballet Sibiu (of Romania)

This year the Central Florida Ballet will bring a “European touch” to its annual ‘Nutcracker’ production by partnering with the Ballet Sibiu (of Romania); dancers of both companies will be featured in the performances in Orlando and abroad. Vasile Petrutiu, Executive Director of the Central Florida Ballet says “Through our partnership with the Ballet Sibiu, our Central Florida audiences will be able to experience the American and European styles of ballet. It will bring an extra flair and excitement to the production available in no other production in the area.”

The idea for the partnership came through the Executive Director’s familial ties to his homeland. Born in Transylvania, Petrutiu began his career with the Romanian Classical and Contemporary Ballet Company and made the gutsy decision to defect in 1982 while on tour in USA/ Canada. Fast forward to 2011, Petrutiu’s decision led to a star-studded dance career and he is now entering into the eleventh season with Central Florida Ballet; the company he founded in 2000. “Every couple of years, I return to Romania to visit family and see what is new. I feel blessed to have the opportunity to have been able to experience ballet all over the world, and am proud to be able to share my passion for the ballet and Romanian heritage with Orlando”.

For the past four years, the CEO of the Arts and Cultural Affairs in Sibiu, Mr. Ovidiu Dragoman, had followed Petrutiu’s accomplishments via the internet and the media. Petrutiu received several invitations from Mr. Dragoman to take part in various Romanian cultural events and in 2011 finally accepted to be a judge at the 2011 International Dance Competition Sibiu where a bigger deal immediately took place. During Petrutiu’s stay, Mr. Dragoman viewed one of Central Florida Ballet’s Nutcracker performances on DVD and the World Ballet Competition - All Stars of Dance. He was immensely impressed with the quality staging of all performances presented by Central Florida Ballet and insisted on creating a joint venture. This December will mark the first ever joint venture between the two companies. The premiere performances will be held in Orlando on December 9 – 11 with performances to follow in Sibiu later that month. “This is a tale that continually delights adults and children alike, and we're proud to offer audiences one of the best productions in the nation."

About the Production: Premiering in 2001, Central Florida Ballet’s “The Nutcracker” rises above the traditional crowd with its use of fiber optics, thrilling pyrotechnics, and unique aerial acrobatics. Just two years after its premiere, the production was featured by USA Today as the “pyrotechnic Nutcracker” and named “one of the top-five outstanding productions in the nation” by CNN Headline News! The Southeast Tourism Society recently named it “One of the Top 20” events in the southeast region.

CFB Trainee Joins School of Pittsburgh Ballet Theatre!

The 2011-12 school year marks a big change for Hunter Finnegan, a Trainee of the Central Florida Ballet, who packed up and moved to Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania just this week to study at the prestigious School of Pittsburgh Ballet Theater. "I am ecstatic, nervous, and looking forward to opportunities I will have studying at PBT" says Finnegan. Finnegan chose to begin training in Pittsburgh after attending the 2011 Summer Intensive - where the directors were very impressed by the training he received through the Central Florida Ballet Academy.

No stranger to ballet, Hunter began the art form when he was eight years old and gave up gymnastics to pursue it seriously. Now fifteen years old, he is homeschooled, takes ballet classes six days a week at the Central Florida Ballet Academy and also trains in Irish dancing (he qualified for the Irish World Dancing Championships in 2010 and 2011). Just a teen, he has many roles to add to his resume from CFB productions - including performing as Fritz in Central Florida Ballet's "The Nutcracker" among many other featured roles in "Peter & the Wolf", "The Ugly Duckling", "Paquita" and most recently "9/11 An American Moment".

CFB's Artistic Director, Vladimir Bykov, has trained Finnegan extensively and says Finnegan's dedication is the reason for his success. "Hunter is intelligent, determined, and willing to put in the work to continue building his future career as a dancer. There is no doubt that he has a bright future ahead of him".

'Nutcracker' Auditions this Saturday!

It may be the first day of September, but the classical holiday tradition, "The Nutcracker", is just around the corner! The Central Florida Ballet will be holding its annual audition for the production this Saturday for local Central Florida dancers.

Freelance professional dancers and students from any dance studio may audition to become a part of this nationally acclaimed production - it has been featured by USA Today, CNN Headline News, and named a top event by the Southeast Tourism Society. Check out a YouTube preview of the CFB's "Nutcracker".

Dancers should arrive 30 minutes before their Audition time to register and get their audition number. Rehearsals will begin in late September and are usually held on the weekends.

The CFB Academy Expands Studio!

The Central Florida Ballet Academy is counting on a big year - and we mean that literally! Over the past week, construction has taken place to expand one of the Academy's three studios. "The Academy has grown significantly over the past year and we needed additional space to accommodate the increase in students." says School Director, Diane Withee.

That means the Central Florida Ballet Academy is now operating with three large studios all of which are equipped with sprung flooring (which reduce the chance of athletic injuries). "I was so surprised when I walked in - It's so much bigger and nice! I can't wait to start dance for the year!" says Lauren, a Level 8 student this year. Lauren will get her chance along with her fellow classmates this Monday, August 29th when the CFB Academy opens for the 2011-12 school year. With classes filling up quickly, the Academy is sure to bring the 'wow factor' when all of the students check out the studios for the first time next week.

Central Florida Ballet & Northland, A Church Distributed Unite for Free Benefit Performance

The Central Florida Ballet will commemorate the 10^th Anniversary attack on the World Trade Center with its’ stirring performance entitled “9/11 An American Moment” - to be held at Northland, A Church Distributed on Sunday, September 11^th at 2:00pm.

Created in 2006, “9/11 An American Moment” is an original production capturing the poignancy of tested and proven American patriotism; her courage, faith, resolve and pride in response to the World Trade Center attack.

During the hour-long performance featuring various types of dance, you are taken through a storyline of scenes describing the before, during, and after the attack. It gets “very real” with the inclusion of news-broadcast sound bites and a depiction of a child praying on the loss of her father after the disaster. “The performance is one of the most moving I have ever been apart of in my dance career. It doesn’t matter which generation you are, it is a relatable performance on all levels. It’s a show you won’t be walking out of without crying.” Says Vasile Petrutiu, Founder and Executive Director of the Central Florida Ballet.

After seeing the performance, Danny Gordon, a Governing Elder at the Northland, A Church Distributed knew more people needed to experience this touching story and knew Northland, A Church Distributed would be the perfect place to do so. “We are proud to be able to bring Central Florida such an incredible tribute to the victims of 9/11 and to the first responders, armed forces, fire fighters, and law enforcement officers who risk their lives daily to protect our country.”

CFBA Graduate Chosen to Attend FSU Dance Program

Looking at a dual-major of Dance and Exercise Science, our 2011 CFBA Graduate, Emily Williams, auditioned for several dance programs earlier this year to decide where to attend college. After several airplane rides and auditions, she decided to attend the dance program at Florida State University – and is thrilled with her decision.

“FSU's dance program is very competitive and hard to get accepted. I met a bunch of students that tried out and didn't make it. They only accepted around 40 students in total expecting about 20 to actually end up attending.”

What does the FSU program boast?

Emily noted that her decision to attend was somewhat influenced by their unique study abroad program. “FSU’s dance program was different in that during your senior year they have a study abroad program that enables you to move to New York City, Paris, or Spain for one summer semester to study dance, take classes, audition, etc. They started this program to help their graduating seniors to find a job after they graduate.”

Interview with Upcoming Summer Intensive Student!

In just 2 weeks,the Central Florida Ballet Academy will host its annual Summer Intensive Dance Program (July 11-August 6). The CFB Summer Intensive is a formal program offering professional ballet training in the Russian Method as well as a variety of other dance styles. The program is designed to both challenge and encourage young dance students.

We sat down with Cassandra LeRette, a student of the CFB Academy, to find out her thoughts on the upcoming program.

What are you most looking forward to in the Summer Intensive Dance Program (SIDP)? Variations class.

Share your MOST memorable experience from a past SIDP: The 2007 SIDP performance, which was held at the Bob Carr Performing Arts Center, and all of the weekend activities!

Which class are you excited to take (that you don’t take during the year) and why? Excited to take yoga/conditioning because of the fact that we can relax out bodies from all of the hard work we do!!

How do you prepare each day for class? Each day I prepare by eating a healthy breakfast, getting to class early and stretching and conditioning!

What is your ideal lunch during the program and how does it help you be energized for the rest of the day? My ideal lunch would be a banana, a sandwich, and a water bottle. It helps me be energized because it is healthy. No junk food will help with your health and/or your energy!

What do you expect to bring away from the SIDP? I hope to bring away more technique and experience with different styles of classes we don't have during the year.

Mini Dance Camp: This camp is for beginner level students between the ages of 3-6. Students enjoy classes in ballet, jazz, tap, dress-up, coloring, story time, and more! Extended Session: This camp is for preparatory to advanced level students and allows students the opportunity to train during the summer. Classes are held from 9:00-11:30 am (Monday-Friday). Summer Intensive Dance Program: This is a formal summer program offering professional ballet training in the Russian Method as well as a variety of other dance styles for students ages 8 - 18. Instruction in Pilates, character, lyrical, and musical theatre is also offered. Since then she has been featured in lead roles with the Studio & Professional Company AND recently got the rare chance to train in New York City training with Gelsey Kirkland! In Summer of 2010, Ms. Withee attended the summer program of the Washington Ballet where she received a full tuition scholarship for the 2010-11 school year & the opportunity to perform with the professional company. Later that summer, she trained at Gelsey Kirkland Academy of Classical Ballet and upon completion of the three week program, also received a scholarship for the 2010-11 school year. With such incredible offers, where did Ms. Withee decide to train?

Ms. Withee ended up choosing to study in New York at the Gelsey Kirkland Academy of Classical Ballet (at the age of 15)! "I chose to study with Gelsey because she is one of ballet's greatest. She knows everything about the dance world and I knew it was a once in a lifetime opportunity." During her training, she benefited from daily lessons from Gelsey Kirkland and was featured as "Spanish Lead, Snow Demi Soloist, Waltz Soloist and Marzipan" in the premiere production of the GKA's The Nutcracker.
"My experience at GKA was unforgettable. I was not only was challenged by an intense schedule of dancing from 9:00am to many times 8:00pm at night, but also learned a great deal about artistry along the way. Gelsey showed me a different side of dance which I will take with me to every company in the future." says Ms. Withee

What's next for Ms. Withee? She returned home to train at the Central Florida Ballet Academy for the beginning of summer break and later this summer will return to the Washington Ballet for their 5-week program. After that... the future is wide open!

About Sasha de Sola: As a young talented dancer, Sasha delighted Orlando crowds with her performances as Maria in Central Florida Ballet's "The Nutcracker" and numerous featured roles as a member of the CFB Studio Company. In 2004, Sasha received a FULL tuition scholarship to the prestigious Kirov Academy of Ballet in Washington, D.C. and traveled to Washington, D.C. to finish her training. After graduation, she joined the San Francisco Ballet as an apprentice in 2006 and the company in 2007.

CFB to present World Ballet Competition 2011!

Its THE summer event you've been waiting for! For the fifth consecutive year, the Central Florida Ballet will once again host the World Ballet Competition in Orlando, Florida, USA. Since its 2007 inauguration, the WBC has since generated over 1.5 million views via YouTube.com and LiveStream.com, multi-page layouts in magazines including Dance For You (based in Europe), and most importantly an enthusiastic audience who are astounded by talent seen in each event!

The idea for the World Ballet Competition came with the intent to build support for the performing arts by making it more enticing to Americans. In the summer of 2007, Vasile Petrutiu (Founder and General Director of the Central Florida Ballet) inaugurated the World Ballet Competition. Petrutiu added unique elements to generate audience interest which include, an instantaneous computerized scoring system, live online broadcast, and drawing of numbers by each competitor the day before competition rounds encompass WBC’s unique features, unheard in other ballet competitions. The World Ballet Competition concludes with the "All Stars of Dance" performance which features winning competitors among the dance world's biggest stars - and is the most popular among every attendee.

This year the WBC will be held from May 30 - June 4 at the Bob Carr Performing Arts Center in Orlando, Florida. Be sure to tell your friends, family, and any arts supporter!

CFB Joins Top Arts Organizations

Central Florida Ballet recently announced and began participation in the Kennedy Center: Capacity Building Program. Central Florida Ballet joins 47 Top Arts organizations from the Central Florida area in this new program, which is designed to keep arts alive.

The Orlando Sentinel noted:

"Central Florida’s major arts organizations will receive free training from a brain trust at the prestigious Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts in a new program designed to keep arts groups alive.

Among the 48 participating groups are some of the best-known in Central Florida: the Orlando Philharmonic, Orlando Shakespeare Theater, Mennello Museum of American Art, Orlando Ballet, Crealde School of Art and Bach Festival Society."

Don’t let the cold air fool you! Auditions for the 2011 Summer Intensive Dance Program are coming up fast (January 29, 2011 to be exact). To gain some insight and details on this dynamic program, we took a moment to speak with previous students of the CFB Summer Intensive Dance Program.

Here are some quick facts on each of the students:

Hunter Finnegan – Won 2^nd Place at the World Ballet Competition 2010 in the Preparatory Division and scholarships to Pittsburgh Ballet Theatre & Central Florida Ballet.

Cassandra LeRette – Recently featured as Maria (Clara) in CFB’s 2010 “The Nutcracker”.

Emily Williams – Featured as the Shepherdess in CFB’s 2010 “The Nutcracker”

Kailey Withee – A past member of the CFB Competition Team & Studio Company, she recently moved to New York City to study at the Gelsey Kirkland Academy of Classical Ballet where she received a scholarship to the year round program.

What do you gain from the program?

HUNTER: Your technique improves. You learn new dances.

CASSANDRA: You gain technique and experience.

KAILEY: Strength and cleaner technique.

EMILY: Knowledge about dance history, you do not normally get throughout the year.

What do you enjoy most about the summer intensive program?

HUNTER: Meeting new people and dancing.

CASSANDRA: I enjoy taking the large variety and amount of classes with different teachers.

KAILEY/EMILY: New teachers and being around friends all day while learning new dance abilities. It’s also nice having character and acting classes.

What is your most memorable experience from a past summer program?

CASSANDRA: Going to Arabian Nights and doing all of the outside activities!

KAILEY/EMILY: Oooppaa!! Without a doubt, the Orange Level - Character piece from the 2008 Summer Intensive Dance Program. It was a lot of fun to dance and the audience loved it. In addition, learning new Repertory dances are always fun and bring lots of laughs.

What class is your favorite to take and why?

HUNTER: Lyrical or tap. They are fun and different from Ballet class.

CASSANDRA: Ballet because each day your body is different, and I love feeling that I am getting better each day!

KAILEY/EMILY: Variations – you get to put all of your knowledge and hard work to use. Its gives you a glimpse of being a professional ballerina – what you train so hard for.

If you could sum up the program in one word, what would it be?

HUNTER: Fantastic.

CASSANDRA: Amazing!

KAILEY: Challenging and worthwhile.

EMILY: Exhilarating and exciting!

Announces Auditions for the

2011 Summer Intensive Dance Program

Orlando Auditions: January 29, 2011 & February 26, 2011

THE COMPANY

Led by acclaimed Director and Choreographer, Vasile Petrutiu, the company’s mission is service through dance. The Central Florida Ballet has received international recognition from CNN Headlines News, USA Today, the Southeast Tourism Society for its innovative, pyrotechnic “The Nutcracker”. Its original production of “9/11 An American Moment” was also recognized by the House of Representatives in Washington, D.C. In 2007, Petrutiu inaugurated the World Ballet Competition, which each year awards over $100,000 in cash prizes and scholarships. In 2010, the WBC International Job Fair and Master Class Workshop were added due to the competition’s great success.

THE CENTRAL FLORIDA BALLET: Summer Intensive

Central Florida Ballet offers professional ballet training in the Russian Method and its program is designed to both challenge and encourage young dance students. Classes are held in Central Florida Ballet’s studios, which are equipped with sprung flooring. Students are placed in ballet groups by age and ability.

Depending on their level, students may expect 3 to 7 hours of dance each day (except weekends). Students enrolled in the Summer Program make vast improvements in their dancing abilities and are well prepared for the Fall Semester.

Curriculum

The summer program offers intensive study in ballet, pointe, variations, modern, jazz and partnering. Instruction in Pilates, character, hip-hop, lyrical and musical theatre is also offered among seminars in choreography and acting for dancers along with studies in dance-related topics including dance history, music theory, injury prevention and nutrition.

End of Session Demonstration

A Student Demonstration will be given at the end of the session for all students participating in the final three weeks (final two weeks for CFBA students).

Chaperones and Scholarships

Instructors and/or parents of enrolled students may apply to serve as hotel and excursion chaperones thereby ‘earning’ free hotel housing. Work-study scholarships are available to enrolled dancers 18 years of age and older. These chaperones assist in classes as well as serving as excursion guides and hotel chaperones. A limited number of partial scholarships are available to students based on a combination of merit and need.

Housing

A room and board arrangement may be available for $300/week with a local host family whose child also attends the Central Florida Ballet Summer Intensive.

Irina Dvorovenko: Past Performances

This November, audience favorite, Irina Dvorovenko of American Ballet Theatre, is returning to Orlando to perform in Central Florida Ballet's "The Nutcracker"; marking the 3rd time she will be featured as the Sugar Plum Fairy in CFB's nationally acclaimed production.

During her last Nutcracker performance in 2006 with the Central Florida Ballet, the Orlando Sentinel boasted “Irina Dvorovenko and Maxim Beloserkovsky, whose stellar technique and elegance gives the Sugar Plum Fairy and her Cavalier a sumptuous regality”. Irina is sure to bring an added thrill this holiday season, especially being the only guest artist in Orlando with such star caliber.

As many of you know, Central Florida Ballet is presenting The Nutcracker this November. We sat down with the General Director, Vasile Petrutiu, to hear his thoughts on the upcoming show...

What can we expect new from this year’s performance of The Nutcracker? The ever great Sugar Plum Fairy “Irina Dvorovenko” partnering with “Alexei Tyukov”, a bravura Russian born dancer among few others debuting with CFB in different roles.

When did you first start the Nutcracker? This production was premiered in 1995 in Orlando. 2 other productions were choreographed and performed in the 80’s in Dallas, TX. and Mobile, AL.

What sets your Nutcracker apart from others in the area/makes it so special? Original choreography and storyline with an uncommon combination of pyrotechnics and special effects, aerial acrobatics, well rehearsed dancers complimented by internationally recognized guest artists.

What roles have you played? Most male roles except FRITZ. Countless of Cavalier roles performed on countless stages in the world.

Do you have any surprises in store for the audience? First explosion for the ones attending the show for the first time. For others; debuting and returning dancers featured in new scenes with rejuvenated props.

Do you like The Nutcracker as compared to other ballets? Nutcracker is a winter holiday tradition. If you like presents you must include Nutcracker tickets on your Santa’s List. I like the Nutcracker. One can feel complete just by listening to the music.

What is your favorite dance in The Nutcracker? Russian!

Are you excited about Irina coming? What about Alexei? Could not ask for better guest artists.

Have you received complaints about your long speeches? Few times!

Do you feel uncomfortable when people do not understand you? No; it’s fun!

What is your favorite scene and why? Maria/Prince Nikita pas de deux; unique passionate music, fluid movements, elevated lifts in a reverie scene, elements ideal for a beautiful dream.

Are you excited about The Nutcracker being in November? Yes!
